LTE will initially be deployed in densely populated urban areas—overlaid on the 3G and Evolved 3G networks—to boost data capacity and deliver seamless, high-speed mobile data to subscribers with LTE/3G multimode devices. Voice services will continue to be delivered via 3G, and 3G will also provide data service when subscribers move outside LTE coverage areas.

In areas where unpaired (TDD) spectrum is available, LTE-TDD is the ideal solution. Like its FDD relative, LTE-TDD is fully interoperable with 3G. Furthermore, it leverages LTE-FDD’s core network and a vast LTE/3G ecosystem.
